About this event

Bhutan navigates its path to modernity through the lens of “Gross National Happiness” - cultural and environmental preservation, economic equity, clean governance - while its youth wrestle with an education system ill-suited to real job prospects, urban migration and the slow fade of tradition. “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” (2019, 109 min), shot in the real village named in its title, became Bhutan’s first Oscar-nominated drama and marked the directorial debut of local filmmaker Pawo Choyning Dorji. Charming and quietly funny, it follows a young teacher posted to a remote mountain village, turning into a thoughtful meditation on happiness and what community actually means.
