About this event

An iconic low-income housing complex in Phnom Penh outlasted Khmer Rouge purges and later became a haven for artists, but wasn't built to survive the pace of 21st-century gentrification - the backdrop for White Building, Kavich Neang's sad, beautiful feature debut. Something deeply personal runs through the film, unsurprising given Neang grew up in the building himself, having already captured its final days in the 2019 documentary Last Night I Saw You Smiling. Here, a teenage boy named Samnang confronts his family's displacement, the limits of tradition, and a turning point in his own sense of self. Neang Kavich will attend the screening for a Q&A.
