When the mythical Green Destiny sword is stolen by the mysterious, rebellious Jen Yu, legendary warrior Li Mu Bai and fellow master Yu Shu Lien set out to reclaim it in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee's sweeping wuxia epic set in 18th-century Qing dynasty China. Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi headline a film that pairs gravity-defying martial arts choreography with a deeply felt story of duty, restraint and forbidden desire. It became the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the US at the time, sweeping that year's Oscars with ten nominations and four wins including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography - a record it still shares with Roma as the most-nominated foreign film in Academy Awards history, and one both The Guardian and The New York Times have since ranked among the greatest films of the century. Roger Ebert called it a superb action adventure romance with terrific acting and a much-welcome heart, while Empire praised how Ang Lee brought wuxia to global art-house audiences with grace.
