Chan, a police officer who's spent a decade undercover inside the triads, and Lau, a triad mole who's spent just as long climbing the police ranks, find themselves hunting each other once both organizations discover they've been infiltrated - a race to expose the other before either man can be found out. That's Infernal Affairs, Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's Hong Kong thriller, later remade by Martin Scorsese as the Oscar-winning The Departed. The original is tighter and colder, less interested in shootouts than the psychological toll of a decade spent as someone else, and it revived Hong Kong's crime genre at a moment the industry badly needed a hit, becoming one of the most internationally influential Asian thrillers of the 2000s. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times praised its rare emotional complexity for a crime film, while Newsweek's David Ansen called the pace and plot dizzying.
