Asia Cine-Club: Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War 태극기 휘날리며 (2004, South Korea)
About this event
Two brothers in Seoul - Jin-tae, who shines shoes to fund his younger brother's education, and Jin-seok, the student he's protecting - are both conscripted the moment the Korean War breaks out. Jin-tae strikes a desperate bargain with his commanding officer: he'll take the war's most dangerous missions if it buys Jin-seok a ticket home. The medals pile up. So does the toll on who Jin-tae is becoming. Jang Dong-gun and Won Bin star in Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War, which at the time of release was the most expensive film ever made in Korea and became its highest-grossing, a Saving Private Ryan-scale production turned toward a war rarely given this kind of epic treatment on screen. Director Kang Je-gyu doesn't flinch from the combat, but the film's real subject is what war does to the bond between two brothers who started out simply trying to protect each other. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times said it successfully combines audience-friendly sentimentality with absolutely grueling combat footage, while the New York Post's V.A. Musetto called it shamelessly contrived and manipulative, yet packing a visceral wallop.
