Asia Cine-Club: Tampopo タンポポ (1985, Japan)
About this event
A trucker in a cowboy hat, Goro (Tsutomu Yamazaki), pulls into a run-down roadside noodle shop with his sidekick Gun (a very young Ken Watanabe). The ramen is terrible. The owner, a widow named Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), begs him to teach her how to make it properly, and Goro rounds up a gang of experts to help - a rich old man’s chauffeur, a noodle master, and a crew of homeless gourmets who cook like Michelin chefs. Juzo Itami built “Tampopo” (1985) as a “noodle western,” lifting its plot straight from Shane, then kept wandering off it entirely. The film keeps cutting away to strangers and their food - a gangster in a white suit (Koji Yakusho) and his lover playing with raw egg yolks, an etiquette class for slurping spaghetti, a dying mother getting up to cook one last dinner. It’s one of the great films about food, and about why food matters to us at all. Come hungry. The Washington Post called it perhaps the funniest movie about the connection between food and sex ever made, while The Guardian described it as a self-assured gem constructed like the bowl of classic ramen the characters strive to cook.
