Loosely inspired by a real Korean serial killer, the film became a genuine box office phenomenon in Korea, topping the charts for three straight weekends and helping cement the country's reputation for pitiless, technically flawless thrillers. It's brutal, relentless, and refuses every easy beat a Hollywood version of this story would reach for. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it a poster child for what a well-made thriller looked like in the classic days, while J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader named it easily the best cop thriller since The Departed.
