BRITAIN FALLING - Four weeks of dark UK cinema: Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
About this event
Richard (Paddy Considine), an ex-soldier, comes back to his small Derbyshire hometown with his younger brother Anthony (Toby Kebbell), who has learning difficulties. Years earlier, the local drug dealers made Anthony’s life hell. Now Richard’s come back to deal with them, one at a time. They laugh at first. Then they start getting very scared. Shane Meadows and Considine wrote “Dead Man’s Shoes” (2004) together and shot it in three weeks - it’s one of the great British revenge films, brutal, sometimes darkly funny, and far sadder than it first looks. Considine is frightening, and won Best British Actor at the Empire Awards over Simon Pegg and Daniel Craig. This was Toby Kebbell’s first film. Don’t read anything about it beforehand. Philip French of The Observer called it a very skillful, superbly edited piece of moviemaking, while the New York Daily News said it explores the nature of revenge itself, leaving audiences in a sweat of dread.
