BRITAIN FALLING - Four weeks of dark UK cinema: This Is England (2006)
About this event
Week two of Britain Falling takes us to the Midlands in 1983. Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) is twelve, bullied at school, and his dad’s just been killed in the Falklands. A gang of skinheads takes him in - friendly, funny, into ska and Doc Martens, and suddenly he has a family. Then Combo (Stephen Graham) gets out of prison, and his version of skinhead is National Front politics, racism and violence. Shaun has to choose which side he’s on. Shane Meadows found Turgoose, who’d never acted before, and his performance in “This Is England” (2006) is astonishing. Stephen Graham is terrifying and, worse, sometimes sympathetic. The film won the BAFTA for Best British Film and spawned three TV sequels that many rank among the best British drama ever made. It’s warm until it isn’t, and it’s ultimately about how easily lonely kids get pulled in by the wrong people. Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader called it masterfully charted and acted, while Sid Smith of the Chicago Tribune described it as a small film that packs a big wallop. Thursday, November 12 | 8:00PM TicTic, Phnom Penh Free entry & popcorn - arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating
