About this event
Told out of chronological order, 500 Days of Summer follows Tom, a hopelessly romantic greeting-card writer, as he pieces through the 500 days of his relationship with the free-spirited Summer, trying to figure out exactly where it fell apart. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, Marc Webb's directorial debut became a genuine cultural moment - less a conventional love story than a meditation on the stories we tell ourselves about love, and praised for refusing the tidy ending romantic comedies usually promise. Its iconic use of LA architecture and needle-drop-heavy soundtrack helped cement it as one of the defining breakup films of its generation; in 2025, New York Times readers voted it among the 100 best films of the 21st century.
Empire called it a strong contender for the most original date movie of the year, while Roger Ebert praised its delightful, inventive comedy.
