A thirteen-year-old's misreading of what she's witnessed between her sister Cecilia and the family's groundskeeper Robbie leads to a lie that destroys both their lives in Atonement - and it's a lie the girl, Briony, spends the rest of the film, and the rest of her own life, trying to atone for. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy star as the couple, with Joe Wright directing from Christopher Hampton's adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel, staging one unbroken tracking shot across the Dunkirk evacuation that's become one of the most talked-about single takes of the 2000s. What makes it a fitting closer for Broken Hearts Club isn't just the tragedy - it's how the film complicates the very idea of a happy ending, right at the point where you're hoping for one. Ray Bennett of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that it sweeps you up on waves of humor, heartbreak and ravishing romance, while A.O. Scott of The New York Times said it arrives with stately grandeur on the big screen. Broken Hearts Club: Atonement Wednesday, September 30th | 8:00 PM | TicTic Free Entry & Popcorn - Arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating.
