Inman deserts the Confederate Army after being wounded and begins a long walk home across a collapsing South, back to Ada, the woman he barely got to know before the war took him in Cold Mountain. Anthony Minghella - the director behind The English Patient - builds it as an odyssey in the literal sense, with Renée Zellweger's scene-stealing turn as the fiercely capable Ruby keeping Ada's half of the story alive while Inman is gone. Jude Law and Nicole Kidman lead a film that spends most of its runtime with the two apart, a strange choice for a love story, but exactly what makes the reunion land as hard as it does - all that waiting given weight instead of just filling time. It's less romance than survival with romance folded into it, and it's better for that restraint. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called it one stunner of a movie, while Time Out described it as a film of rich measure and ambition.
