An unfinished creation with blades for hands is taken in by a suburban family and falls for their teenage daughter Kim in Edward Scissorhands - a modern Beauty and the Beast set against pastel houses and manicured lawns that make Edward's gothic strangeness look almost gentle by comparison. He can't hold a hand without drawing blood, which becomes the film's whole heartbreak in miniature. Johnny Depp, in his first collaboration with Tim Burton, stars alongside Winona Ryder in a film Burton built out of his own teenage years in suburban Burbank, and it shows in how specific the target is - the neighborhood's cheerful cruelty is as much the villain as anything Edward does. It's the rare Burton film where the visual invention never overwhelms the sadness underneath it. Marc Lee of The Daily Telegraph called it almost palpably personal, while the Los Angeles Times described it as an icon of tenderness and artistic alienation.
