A young Osaka woman named Yumiko is left inexplicably widowed when her husband walks onto a railway line and is struck by a train, with no apparent motive - a loss that quietly shapes everything around her even years later, after she remarries and relocates to a remote fishing village on the Sea of Japan. That's the premise of Maborosi, Hirokazu Kore-eda's quietly devastating debut feature, adapted from a Teru Miyamoto novel and told almost entirely through long, still, painterly compositions rather than dialogue. The film announced Kore-eda, then a documentary filmmaker, as a major new voice in Japanese cinema, winning the Golden Osella for Best Cinematography at the 1995 Venice Film Festival and setting the template for the tender, restrained studies of family and loss that would define his career through to his Palme d'Or win for Shoplifters over two decades later. Roger Ebert called it a film of astonishing beauty and sadness, while one Letterboxd critic described it as a remarkably confident, fully formed debut.
