Broken Hearts Club: My Sassy Girl 엽기적인 그녀 (2001)
About this event
Gyeon-woo (Cha Tae-hyun), a drifting engineering student, spots a very drunk girl (Jun Ji-hyun) swaying on the edge of a subway platform. Before passing out, she calls him “honey,” so the whole carriage decides she’s his problem. He hauls her to a love motel to sleep it off and ends up arrested for his trouble. That’s only the start - she’s bossy, violent, unpredictable, and keeps forcing him to read her terrible screenplays, and somehow he can’t stay away. The film never tells you her name. “My Sassy Girl” (2001) grew out of a series of posts a Korean student put online about his real relationship, and went on to become the highest-grossing Korean comedy of all time. It was a hit across Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, helping launch the Korean Wave and turning Jun Ji-hyun into a star across Asia. It’s been remade in America, Japan, China, India and more - none of them come close. It’s funny for an hour, then it guts you. Critic Reinier Brands of Asian Movie Pulse called the leads’ chemistry electric, calling it hard not to love this movie. Wednesday, November 11 | 8:00PM TicTic, Phnom Penh Free entry & popcorn - arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating
