Baz Luhrmann drops Shakespeare's original text - every "wherefore art thou," untouched - into gun-toting gangs, MTV cutting, and neon-lit "Verona Beach," with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the doomed teenagers caught between warring families in Romeo + Juliet. It shouldn't work as well as it does: fourteenth-century verse spoken over a soundtrack of Radiohead and Garbage, in a world of Hawaiian shirts and handguns instead of swords. The film split critics hard on release - some called it a stunt, others a genuinely bold reinvention - but two decades on, it's the version that introduced Shakespeare to a generation who'd otherwise never have picked it up voluntarily, and it made DiCaprio a star in the process. James Berardinelli of ReelViews said Luhrmann, Danes and DiCaprio place this Romeo and Juliet in capable hands, while David Stratton of The Movie Show called it a tremendously bold vision.
