Benjamin Button is born an old man in New Orleans and ages in reverse, growing younger as everyone around him grows older - including Daisy, the woman he loves across an entire lifetime moving in the wrong direction. David Fincher, working from Eric Roth's script loosely adapting F. Scott Fitzgerald, stretches the story across nearly a century, following Benjamin through war, work, and a string of near-misses with Daisy before their timelines finally, briefly, line up. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett star in what's arguably Fincher at his most tender - trading the clinical precision of Se7en or Zodiac for something closer to a fable, with three Oscars going to the makeup and visual effects work that had to age Pitt convincingly in both directions. Underneath the trick, it's really just asking an old question: what does it cost to love someone whose clock runs opposite yours? Richard Brody of The New Yorker called it a sumptuous and stirring romantic drama, while Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times described it as splendidly made.
