About this event

A movie theater is more than a building — it's a time machine, a shared landscape of dreams, and a sanctuary for memories captured on film. That idea anchors a four-day celebration of cinema running August 6th to 9th in Phnom Penh, weaving together Cambodian, Japanese and French perspectives on the architecture, nostalgia and cultural resilience of independent and historic movie theaters. Across screenings, exhibitions and panel discussions with filmmakers, the program asks what really connects communities to the theaters they grow up in. The lineup opens Thursday, August 6th at IFC with the exhibition "Cinema Adrift" and an avant-premiere screening of Becoming Human, followed by a discussion with Polen Ly. Friday brings a screening of This Magic Moment with Lim Kah Wai on hand to discuss it. Saturday is the busiest day, packing in Yuki Tanada's Cinematic Liars of Asahi-za, Davy Chou's Golden Slumbers, Lim Kah Wai's Your Lovely Smile, and a panel titled "What if movie theaters disappeared?" featuring all three filmmakers, moderated by Fujita Sayana. The program closes Sunday at Legend Cinema Exchange Square with Arnaud Desplechin's Filmlovers! and Rithy Panh's The Burnt Theatre. Institut français du Cambodge & Legend Cinema Exchange Square
