Cult Movie Mondays: After Hours (1985)
About this event
Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) is an uptown Manhattan word processor who meets Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) in a coffee shop and takes a late-night cab down to SoHo to see her. His only $20 bill flies out the window on the way, and that turns out to be the best thing that happens to him all night. By the small hours, the subway fare’s gone up, he can’t get home, and a neighborhood mob - partly organized from an ice cream van - has decided he’s the burglar who’s been robbing the block. Scorsese shot “After Hours” (1985) in a hurry after The Last Temptation of Christ collapsed on him, returning to fast, cheap filmmaking on New York streets. It won him Best Director at Cannes, plus Best Feature and Best Director at the first Independent Spirit Awards. Tim Burton was originally set to direct and stepped aside when Scorsese wanted it instead. It’s the closest Scorsese has come to a straight comedy - a nightmare played for laughs, with Teri Garr, Catherine O’Hara, Linda Fiorentino and Cheech & Chong all turning up along the way. Critic David Sterritt of Cineaste called it one of the most entertaining visits to the underworld on film, while Emanuel Levy named it among Scorsese’s smallest but most accomplished work. Monday, November 23 | 8:00PM TicTic, Phnom Penh Free entry & popcorn - arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating
