An Iranian family of four, plus their ailing dog, sets off on a car journey across a rugged, mountainous landscape in Hit the Road, a road movie that starts as bickering, joke-filled family chaos before slowly revealing something far more painful as the trip's true purpose comes into focus. It's the astonishing feature debut of Panah Panahi, son of legendary, repeatedly imprisoned Iranian director Jafar Panahi, and it immediately established him as a major talent in his own right - premiering in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes 2021, winning top prizes at BFI London and Singapore International Film Festivals, and landing on IndieWire's list of the 100 best films of the decade so far in 2025. Variety called it an irresistible Iranian road-movie debut where several stars are born, while IndieWire praised how it swerves between tragedy and gallows humor with the control of a stunt driver.
