Cult Movie Mondays: Ida (2013)
About this event
Anna, a young novice about to take her vows in 1960s Poland, is told by the convent to visit her only living relative before committing to religious life - and learns from her aunt Wanda that she was born Jewish, and that her parents were murdered during the German occupation. Ida follows the two women as they set off across the Polish countryside to find out what actually happened. Agata Trzebuchowska stars alongside Agata Kulesza in Paweł Pawlikowski's film, shot in stark black-and-white academy ratio, running a lean 82 minutes and saying almost nothing out loud that it doesn't also say visually. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Poland's first ever, and remains one of the most purely beautiful films of the last fifteen years - a hard, quiet story told with total control. Godfrey Cheshire of RogerEbert.com called it riveting, original and breathtakingly accomplished on every level, while A.O. Scott of The New York Times named it one of the finest European films in recent memory. Cult Movie Mondays: Ida (2013) Monday, October 26th | 8:00 PM | TicTic, Phnom Penh Free Entry & Popcorn - Arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating.
