Two teenage cousins, Seydou and Moussa, leave Dakar chasing a dream of Europe with no real sense of what the journey will cost them in Io Capitano. Matteo Garrone follows them through desert crossings, Libyan detention centers, and the Mediterranean itself, but shoots it as an odyssey rather than a horror story - closer to magical realism at points than straight reportage, without ever losing sight of how real the danger is. It won Garrone the directing prize at Venice and became Italy's strongest Oscar contender in years, largely on newcomer Seydou Sarr's lead performance. It's a hopeful film about a subject that rarely gets treated that way, which has made it as divisive among critics as it is acclaimed - some find its beauty earned, others find it a little too glossy for the subject matter. Guy Lodge of Variety called it the most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since Garrone's international breakthrough with Gomorrah, while The Hollywood Reporter described it as a road movie to be reckoned with.
