Cult Movie Mondays: Submarine (2010)
About this event
It’s Swansea, 1986. Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is fifteen, wears a duffel coat, and has two goals: lose his virginity before his next birthday, and stop his mother (Sally Hawkins) running off with the new-age guru next door (Paddy Considine), who happens to be her old flame. He works on both using psychology books lifted from his parents’ bedroom, all while chasing Jordana (Yasmin Paige), a classmate who likes setting fires and has no patience for romance. Meanwhile his marine biologist dad (Noah Taylor) quietly comes undone. “Submarine” (2010) marked Richard Ayoade’s debut as writer-director, a long way from playing Moss in The IT Crowd, and earned him a BAFTA nomination. Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys wrote the songs, his first solo release outside the band. Every detail is worked out with precision - each character gets their own color scheme in clothes and belongings, with red slowly creeping into Oliver’s world as he falls for Jordana. It’s the kind of film people watch once and then quote to each other for years. Time Out called it “a spirited and warm film debut,” while Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described Ayoade as “a tremendous new voice in British film.” Monday, November 16 | 8:00PM TicTic, Phnom Penh Free entry & popcorn - arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating
