Lucas is a well-liked kindergarten teacher whose life is quietly, thoroughly destroyed after a small child's offhand lie snowballs into a full-blown accusation of abuse. Mads Mikkelsen stars in The Hunt, Thomas Vinterberg's unbearably patient portrait of an entire close-knit Danish town turning on a man everyone insists they still believe in, in theory, while treating him like a monster in practice. Mikkelsen won Best Actor at Cannes for a performance built mostly on restraint - Lucas rarely raises his voice, which somehow makes the injustice land harder. Vinterberg, co-founder of the Dogme 95 movement, made his name with The Celebration in 1998, and this is widely considered his best work since - a film less interested in whodunit than in how quickly a community can convince itself of anything. The Hollywood Reporter called it Vinterberg's best film since Festen, led by a harrowing Mads Mikkelsen, while MaryAnn Johanson of FlickFilosopher.com described Mikkelsen as heartbreakingly good.
