Cult Movie Mondays: The Last Duel (2021)
About this event
In fourteenth-century France, former friends turned bitter rivals Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) settle their feud the only way left to them - a duel to the death - after Carrouges’s wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) accuses Le Gris of rape. Ridley Scott tells the story three times over, once from each character’s perspective, borrowing the structure straight from Kurosawa’s Rashomon - the small discrepancies between versions carry more weight than the plot itself. Scott was 83 when he made this and shows zero signs of slowing down - it’s one of his most genuinely interesting films in years, anchored by Comer as the one person in the story whose account nobody in power wants to actually hear. Written by Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, with Affleck clearly relishing his role as a preening, bleach-blond count. Critics called it “what you’d call a humdinger” (Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com) and a gripping true story drawing unsettling parallels between past and present (Rafer Guzman, Newsday). Monday, November 2 | 8:00PM TicTic, Phnom Penh Free entry & popcorn - arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating
