About this event

When Iman, newly promoted to investigating judge in Iran's Revolutionary Court, discovers his government-issued gun has gone missing from the family home, paranoia tears his household apart - a fracture that mirrors the unrest spreading through Iranian society as his own daughters get drawn into the real-life 2022 protests. That's the slow-burning premise of The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Mohammad Rasoulof's political thriller, whose backstory is nearly as remarkable as the film itself: sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging by Iranian authorities for making it, Rasoulof fled the country on foot before the film's premiere, arriving in Cannes in secret to a historic fifteen-minute standing ovation. The film went on to win the Special Jury Prize and earn an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature. Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian called it imperfect but beyond doubt courageous and relevant, while Variety praised it as a masterful, livid thinking-person's thriller.
