A roadside assault turns deadly and sends a mistreated housewife and a weary waitress fleeing their small Arkansas town, spiraling a simple weekend getaway into a full-blown life-on-the-run crime spree. That's Thelma & Louise, Ridley Scott's landmark reinvention of the American road movie, built on Callie Khouri's Oscar-winning screenplay and anchored by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, with support from Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen and a breakout early turn from Brad Pitt. The film became a genuine cultural phenomenon on release, earning six Academy Award nominations - Khouri took home Best Original Screenplay - and remains a landmark of feminist cinema, holding an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times called it a fresh, vigorous reinvention of the buddy film genre, while Roger Ebert described it as a revenge tragedy wrapped in humor, discovery and rebellion.
