About this event

During the shoot of And Life Goes On, a young, illiterate stonemason cast as a newlywed husband is secretly in love with the young woman playing his screen wife - who, off camera, won't speak to him at all. Through the Olive Trees closes our Five Weeks of Abbas Kiarostami with a film about the making of the previous one, turning a small, awkward real-life romance into a meditation on cinema's strange power to bring people together against their will. The film's famous final shot - a single, minutes-long take following a tiny figure racing across a hillside through olive groves - has become one of the most analyzed endings in world cinema, precisely because Kiarostami refuses to tell you what it means. Susan Sontag of Artforum called it brilliantly made and irresistibly touching, while The Criterion Collection described it as an ineffably lovely, gentle human comedy steeped in the folkways of Iranian village life.
