An elite U.S. Army bomb disposal unit navigates the Iraq War in The Hurt Locker, centred on Staff Sergeant William James, a reckless, thrill-seeking new squad leader whose extreme risk-taking on improvised explosive devices puts himself and his team constantly on edge. Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty star in a film built around white-knuckle set pieces and a devastating opening idea: "war is a drug." Kathryn Bigelow made history with it at the 2010 Academy Awards, becoming the first woman ever to win Best Director - famously beating her ex-husband James Cameron and Avatar in the process - as the film went on to take six Oscars total, including Best Picture, cementing its place as one of the defining war films of the century for its immersive, near-documentary intensity. Roger Ebert called it a spellbinding war film, while Richard Roeper named it one of the best movies of the year, powered by a star-making performance from Jeremy Renner.
