Four Weeks of Neo-Noir: Blade Runner (1982)

Harrison Ford plays Rick Deckard, a "blade runner" sent to hunt down four replicants - engineered beings built to be indistinguishable from humans - who've slipped illegally back into a soaked, neon-lit Los Angeles of 2019 in Blade Runner. Ridley Scott built the film from Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, fusing hardboiled detective conventions with a future that still doesn't look like anywhere else on screen. The critical reversal here is one of the odder stories in film history: this bombed at the box office and got torn apart by several major critics on release in 1982. By the time Scott's "Final Cut" landed 25 years later, the same paper that once called it a failure was putting it in the canon. Empire called it an unparalleled visual achievement, while The Guardian described it as a timeless sci-fi classic and an overwhelming experience.
