About this event
Karaoke girls at Phnom Penh's "Soul" club, Srey Leak, Me Nea and Cheata were 16 and 17 years old when they became caught up in the virginity trade, each sold by their own mothers. Matthew Watson's documentary The Girls of Phnom Penh (2007, 60 min) probes that complicated mother-daughter relationship in intimate detail, while also tracing the resilient friendship the three girls built with one another - sisters united against a brutal existence they face with remarkable courage and humour, leaning on each other while balancing childhood dreams against the adult lives they lead by night. With a soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, it's a portrait of sisterhood forged through adversity. Free entrance. English subs.
