The first footage ever shot in Cambodia after the Vietnamese ousted the Khmer Rouge in 1979 forms the backbone of Kampuchea: Death and Rebirth (1980, 90 min), a documentary by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann. Through interviews with Cambodian citizens and officials alongside detailed visual investigation, the film lays bare just how thoroughly the Khmer Rouge had devastated what was once called the "pearl of Asia."
