Chain-smoking, gaunt and unflinching, Pina Bausch became dance theatre's high priestess, turning the unremarkable German town of Wuppertal into a site of artistic pilgrimage through a vision that reached both the heights and depths of human nature. Wim Wenders' Pina (2011, 103 min) pays tribute with performances of Bausch's most celebrated works, brought to life by the dancers who knew her choreography best — an artful, insightful documentary tribute to a singular artist.
