From safe havens along the Thai border, the Khmer Rouge waged a guerrilla war against Vietnamese occupiers and the new Hanoi-backed government throughout the 1980s, receiving aid from China and the United States even as hundreds of thousands of Cambodians fled the violence and looming famine.
